Why FADEP?
The idea of FADEP started with a conversation during the NACEP 2018 National Conference state breakout lunch session. NACEP provides an opportunity for institutions around the nation to collectively engage in collegiate collaboration, support, program and professional development, research, and advocacy. Legislation varies from state to state, therefore, what works in one state may not work in another state. We wanted to create a Florida state chapter, FADEP, to provide a platform where educational institutions in Florida could collectively meet, address state legislation, collaborate, support, and provide program and professional development.
How does your background/ experience with dual enrollment add to the new FADEP organization?
I am a former teacher, high school counselor, and I currently serve the students of Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) as the District’s Dual Enrollment Specialist. DCPS is the 20th largest school district in the nation and the 6th largest school district in the state. I work with our four post-secondary partners and our twenty-two high schools to provide oversight for all functions and activities for dual enrollment including short and long term planning, development, and administration of programs, policies, procedures, and services for traditional dual enrollment, ten early college programs at nine high school sites, and early admission.
I have had the opportunity to be a member of NACEP for the last four years where I have gained a wealth of knowledge through exchanging ideas. I served on the Secondary School Partners Committee for two years and worked with the committee last year to publish NACEP’s Standards & Evidence with Secondary Best Practices, a Concurrent Enrollment (CE) Resource for new or expanding high schools and districts.
It has been rewarding to be a member of the FADEP Guiding Team as we work to develop our State chapter, host our first annual conference, and establish by-laws. Together we have worked to host the first annual FADEP State Conference and establish by-laws for our chapter. As the only secondary member of the Guiding Team I recognize how critical it is for secondary institutions to have a voice at the table. I believe that my experience in education and devotion to the organization will be beneficial FADEP.
